Building a performance-led brand for the barista market.

CLIENT: Sanitarium

The Alternative Dairy Co. was created to enter a fast-growing but highly undifferentiated category.
 

While plant-based milk was gaining momentum, most brands were positioned around lifestyle, health, or sustainability -with little distinction at the point of use. In cafés, where the product is judged daily, performance and consistency matter more than claims.

This isn’t a plant-based category. It’s a performance category.

Baristas don’t choose milk for what it says.
They choose it for how it works.

The opportunity was to build a brand aligned to how the category actually operates -not how it’s typically marketed.

We defined a clear strategic role: a brand built for café culture, not the supermarket aisle.

From there, we developed a cohesive brand system from the ground up - spanning positioning, naming, tone of voice, identity and packaging - designed to perform in high-pressure, high-volume environments.

The name, The Alternative Dairy Co., reinforces its role as a true milk alternative, while the product structure creates clarity across a growing range.

Visually, the brand was designed for recognition and usability. A bold, distinctive colour system improves cut-through across formats, while the tone of voice reflects how baristas actually think - direct, practical, and grounded in craft.

Everything was aligned to a single idea:
When the milk works, everything works.

The result is a brand that doesn’t just stand out -  it fits.

Today, The Alternative Dairy Co. is the leading plant-based milk in cafés across Australia and New Zealand, demonstrating how a clear position, built around real-world use, can scale commercially.
