and relatives

Air Tahiti Nui.

Air Tahiti Nui flies New Zealanders and Australians to Paris, Tokyo, and the United States. Every one of those journeys stops in Tahiti.

For years, that stopover was treated as the catch. An extra leg. A connection to put up with on the way to somewhere else. In a market full of airlines offering their own routes to Europe and America, it was a clear disadvantage, and one the airline couldn't change. The flight path was fixed.

Redfire was brought in to find a way to compete. Insight. Strategy. Positioning. Campaign. Execution.

The answer was to stop apologising for the stopover and make it the reason to fly. Tahiti became The World's Best Stopover.

Bookings grew by double digits, and New Zealanders started seeing the airline differently.

THE PROJECT AT A GLANCE
The challenge
Compete for long-haul travellers when every Air Tahiti Nui journey includes a stop that the market saw as a drawback.

The insight
The stop wasn't just anywhere. It was Tahiti, one of the most desired destinations on earth. Travellers weren't losing time. They were being offered paradise on the way.

The strategy
Turn the barrier into the value proposition. Don't minimise the stopover. Celebrate it.

What Redfire did
  • Consumer insight and traveller mindset research
  • Brand strategy and positioning
  • Narrative reframing: from barrier to benefit
  • Messaging for leisure, corporate and VFR travellers
  • Campaign concept and core idea
  • Messaging strategy and copywriting
  • Visual direction and activation toolkit
  • Multi-channel rollout across digital, social and out of home

The outcome
Double-digit growth in bookings, and the stopover repositioned from inconvenience to signature experience.
THE CHALLENGE
A stop nobody wanted.

Long-haul travellers judge airlines on a few things: price, comfort and how fast they get there. On that last point, Air Tahiti Nui looked like it was starting behind.

Travellers saw the stopover as friction. More time in transit. Another airport. A reason to choose a direct route or a bigger carrier.

The route couldn't change. The aircraft, the pricing and the service could all be strong, but as long as the stopover read as a negative, every other message had to work twice as hard.

THE INSIGHT
It's not a stopover. It's Tahiti.

Our starting point was the traveller, not the timetable.

Ask a New Zealander or an Australian to picture Tahiti and they don't think of a transit lounge. They think of turquoise lagoons, overwater bungalows and the kind of holiday most people save years for.

Air Tahiti Nui wasn't asking travellers to sit through a delay. It was offering them a bonus trip to one of the most aspirational destinations in the world, on the way to Paris or Los Angeles.

The problem was never the stop. It was how the stop had been framed.

THE STRATEGY
Don't hide it. Celebrate it.

So we flipped it. Instead of playing the stopover down, we put it at the front of everything.
The core idea became Tahiti: The World's Best Stopover. A simple shift in perspective that turned the airline's biggest perceived weakness into its most distinctive advantage. No competitor could offer it. No direct flight could match it.

The value proposition changed completely without changing a single flight path.

THE MESSAGING
One idea, three types of traveller.

The idea had to work for very different people.

For leisure travellers, the stopover became a holiday within a holiday: a few days in paradise before Paris or after Los Angeles. For corporate travellers, it was a chance to break up a long journey and arrive in better shape. For travellers visiting friends and relatives, it turned a familiar trip into something to look forward to.

Alongside the emotional hook, we layered in the rational reasons to choose Air Tahiti Nui: modern aircraft, competitive pricing and a service experience shaped by Polynesian hospitality. The heart of the campaign was the stopover. The proof points made it easy to say yes.
THE CAMPAIGN
The world's best stopover.

We built the campaign around the idea and gave it a visual direction that made Tahiti impossible to ignore: colour, light and the promise of time on the water.

An activation toolkit kept the campaign consistent and easy to deploy as it rolled out across digital, social and out-of-home channels. Every execution carried the same message. Tahiti isn't the price of the journey. It's the reward.

THE RESULT
A change in perspective that changed everything

The campaign delivered double-digit growth in bookings for Air Tahiti Nui from New Zealand and Australia.

It changed how Kiwis and Aussies talked about the airline, too. The stopover went from something travellers tolerated to something they chose.

Over the same period, New Zealand became French Polynesia's third-largest visitor market, behind only France and North America, with 7% growth from 2023 to 2024.

For us, that's what good brand strategy should do. Find the truth in what a business already has, frame it in a way people connect with, and give them a reason to choose it.
